Quality of life‏

15-Nov-2004
Happy birthday to you Mr. President (Dr. Kalam).

Can we undertake a special project on your birthday to improve quality of life – make the country mosquito free? In order to do that we need to cover up all open drains, swamp and any other source of mosquito breeding. Every year hundreds of people, young and old, rich and poor die of malignant malaria. I believe this is as important project as building highways and airports. Because of my IT profession I got the opportunity to live in different developed countries. I never had to use mosquito net there. Why should I use mosquito net at my home in Calcutta? I sincerely believe it is a doable project, which can be completed in 2 years. Actually I have a broader definition of quality of life.

I will breathe fresh air with full of oxygen – vehicle and other form of pollution should be kept at safest level.

Every road will have footpath. We are completely trapped in this regard. Most of the small and mid sized roads do not have footpath. So, it is free for cars, buses, rickshaws, autos and people. With increasing number of cars problem is getting worse.

Every road will have marked lanes and drivers will follow the lane. Traffic must be forced to be as disciplined as in any developed country. Most of the Indian cars are dented.

There should not be any dogs, cows or other animals on the street. Thousands of people get dog bite everyday.

There should not be hawkers or shops on the footpath. Vegetable sellers occupy large part of footpath in Calcutta. They even encroach into the roads. We should build shopping centers (not mall). But they must be  maintained properly.

Roads and footpaths must be well maintained.

Roads, footpaths, railway stations and any public space including office building should be absolutely clean.

I can add many more items in the list. If we address above issues it will have major impact on the approach towards life. I don’t think it will cost more than Rs 1000 crore. We are born and lived in an environment of indiscipline. Once Calcutta metro rail was awarded best-maintained underground rail in the world. Same people who spit on the road check themselves when they enter into the metro station. Reason is simple it is  maintained so clean. Every staff is well dressed with high degree of professionalism.
