Bhagalpur Train Accident

02-Dec-2006
Dear PM,

You expressed your grief over Bhagalpur train accident. Thank you very much. You have done your job. Can you please answer two simple questions?

Where is the professional rescue team? Whenever a disaster strikes it is always same old scene – local people doing the rescue operation with bare hands. If we could save even one life by timely mobilizing
all the resources, I would consider it as a great achievement. I do not understand what stops us in creating national emergency units all over India in the line with similar units that we see in developed countries. It is not so much of money but lack of vision that limits us forming a professional team who can rush to in any kind of emergency be it natural calamity or terrorist attack or accidents or to any event that requires immediate rescue operation.

When will the train journey be safe in India? Every year we are having major accidents. But we are not doing anything to eliminate the root causes. I do not think to put all the recommended safety measures in place require enough funds which cannot be budgeted for. Again it comes down to vision and efficiency of the people who are in charge of the ministry.

Sir we have one thousand problems in our country and all the problems are priority ONE. We expect an efficient prime minister should have enough bandwidth to attack all of them simultaneously.
